How does a move to electric mobility meet the goals of Moncton’s Community Energy and Emissions Plan?

    Moncton has committed to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions (GHG's) to net zero by 2050. Transportation – how we get around town – is one of our biggest sources of GHGs. The 2022 Community Energy and Emissions Plan supports a gradual shift to low- or zero-emissions travel modes.

    While public transit, walking, and cycling will be an important part of Moncton's zero-emissions future, continuing improvements in battery technology have opened up a range of low-emissions electric options that meet travel needs that traditional active transportation might not. 


    What can the City of Moncton do to address barriers to electric vehicle and e-micromobility adoption?

    There are a range of policy and program options available. The following list was compiled by Dunsky Consulting for the City to consider.


    To support e-micromobility

     

    Incorporate e-micromobility into City planning and outreach

    Example actions include:

    • Adopt a complete streets approach for new and retrofitted streets
    • Include e-micromobility information in the City’s “Get Around” webpage

     

    Advance supportive e-micromobility policies

    Example actions include:

    • Advocate for a provincial update to the definition of electric bicycles
    • Review local by-laws to ensure access and safety for e-bike users

     

    Enhance e-bike accessibility 

    Example actions include:

    • Explore developing a financial incentive program for e-bike purchases
    • Conduct a feasibility study for a public e-bike share system

     

    Improve access to secure public and private e-bike parking

    Example actions include:

    • Establish parking and charging guidelines for new residential and non-residential buildings
    • Advocate for retrofit requirements that accommodate eMicromobility parking and charging

     

     

    To support electric vehicles

     

    Improve access to EV charging at home

    • Establish EV-ready requirements for new residential buildings
    • Explore the creation of financial incentives for residential building EV-ready retrofits

     

    Improve access to EV charging in public spaces

    Example actions include:

    • Develop siting guidelines for public infrastructure with a focus on user experience
    • Install public charging where network gaps remain

     

    Support affordability of electric vehicles

    Example actions include:

    • Advocate to the provincial and federal governments to maintain current level of EV purchase incentives to 2030
    • Promote existing incentives and provide education on the benefits and logistics of EV ownership through the City website and other outreach

     

    Support fleet vehicle electrification

    Example actions include:

    • Pursue electrification of the City of Moncton’s fleet
    • Provide public charging in locations that support electrification of taxis
