Heritage Conservation
Consultation has concluded
In 1996, we established the first Heritage Preservation By-law to help protect Moncton’s rich collection of architecture and landscapes that date back to the nineteenth century. Currently, more than 120 properties are protected as individual landmarks. Our Heritage Conservation By-law ensures that designated heritage homes, buildings and properties are conserved to preserve their original historical character. Grants are available to property owners seeking to undertake projects that conserve or enhance the historic character of their property.
Heritage Designation Study
We’re currently conducting a heritage designation study to further protect additional properties. Certain property owners in the City will be consulted in the attempt to match properties identified as heritage assets in the City’s By-law with those in the Canadian Registry of Historic Places. Consultation with landowners is ongoing and will be brought to Moncton City Council through a Public Hearing later in 2022.
The Heritage Conservation Board
The Heritage Conservation Board (HBC) is appointed by City Council to oversee the administration of the Heritage Conservation By-law (Z-1116). The Board advises Council on all matters pertaining to municipal heritage conservation under the Province of New Brunswick’s Heritage Conservation Act. They also research local heritage, properties and architecture as well as promote heritage stewardship in the community.
Since 2019, the HBC, in partnership with the Culture and Heritage department and local partners, hosts an annual Moncton Heritage Week to promote the city’s history and built heritage through activities such as webinars, live tours, and Heritage Awards.
