Since 2021, the City of Moncton has received complaints about strong odours from residents in the north end of the city.

The City has worked with the provincial Department of Environment and Local Government, which conducted 19 separate odour surveys between the fall of 2021 and the spring of 2022.

The surveys identified the main sources of odour as Rayan Environmental Solutions and the TransAqua composting facility. Environment and Local Government required both facilities to develop odour control plans and those plans were completed in July 2022.

However, North End residents continue to report odour issues and remain concerned about local air quality and potential impacts on their health.

In August 2023, the City of Moncton retained the services of Hive Engineering, an environmental engineering firm, to conduct air quality testing within areas of concern.

Hive Engineering is currently seeking input from residents to ensure their sampling program targets all areas of concern.

HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE

  1. Respond to the survey below.
  2. Ask a question about the project in the Q&A tab below.
  3. Send us an email at letschat@moncton.ca
  4. Attend an information session on Sept. 13 from 6 p.m.-7 p.m. at Evergreen Park School, 333 Evergreen Dr.

Please note: The phone line to report significant odour events is now closed. Based on your input and feedback, samples were collected on Sept. 14, 18, 22, 26, 27, and 29. For the time being, the data collection phase has concluded.

Click on the Survey or Q&A tab below to get started. The survey should take less than five minutes to complete. The deadline to submit the survey is noon on Sept. 22.

HOW YOUR FEEDBACK WILL BE USED

The results of this survey will be compiled and shared with the project team. The survey asks you to provide your civic address. This information will not be shared publicly and will only be used by the consultant to pinpoint the location of odours. Information shared publicly will not include specific addresses and will be compiled in a way that protects the anonymity of participants. This is meant to be a safe and respectful space to share your feedback.

    Hi,

Thanks for the question! The testing period will be open for a period of a month and we are going to run up to five, unannounced sampling events during that time based on information from the community about observed odours. If there are no odours reported during that month period, the testing will be extended or deferred until the spring.

    Hi,

Thank you for the question. This particular air quality study is focused specifically on the North End.

Issues related to cannabis odours should be reported directly to the federal government via this online form: https://www.healthycanadians.gc.ca/en/health-canada/services/drugs-medication/cannabis/recalls-adverse-reactions-reporting/reporting-form.html

These reports are referred to local teams who can conduct inspections at licensed sites like this one.
